Robotic Prostatectomy

Benefits of Robotic Prostatectomy

Robotic prostatectomy (also called robot assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy) means removing the entire prostate gland using minimally-invasive laparoscopic techniques while utilizing the da Vinci Robot. The surgeon controls every aspect of the surgery and uses the robot as a tool.
Laparoscopy or laparoscopic surgery means operating inside the abdomen or pelvis through several small “keyhole” incisions with the aid of a camera.

Benefits of robotic prostate surgery:

  • Better visualization (enhanced imaging and 3-D vision)
  • Less blood loss
  • Less time with a urethral catheter
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Quicker return to normal activity

Regardless of the technique used (open surgery, laparoscopic surgery, robotic surgery), the goals of radical prostatectomy are the same: removing the cancerous prostate, preserving urinary bladder control, and preserving erectile function.
