Urologist Performs First Robotic Surgery to Remove Prostate Cancer in St. Charles County

(St. Louis – February 25, 2020) Travis Dum, MD, a urologist with Urology of St. Louis, recently performed the first robotic prostatectomy surgery in St. Charles County for prostate cancer. The surgery was performed at Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital using a da Vinci Xi Surgical System.

Dr. Dum said this type of robotic surgery has become the standard of care for prostate cancer surgery and having this option available in St. Charles will be a benefit to patients.

“The primary reason this type of surgery has become the standard of care over traditional open surgery is that it is less invasive, resulting in reduced pain, less blood loss, and a shorter stay in the hospital,” said Dr. Dum. “The technology is not new, but now residents of St. Charles County and the surrounding areas have convenient access to a variety of robotic assisted surgeries.”

The da Vinci Surgical System can be used across a spectrum of minimally invasive surgical procedures and has been optimized for multi-quadrant surgeries in the areas of gynecology, urology, thoracic, cardiac and general surgery. Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital acquired the system earlier this year.
