St. Louis, MO (May 23, 2023) May is Women’s Health Month and Urology of St. Louis (USL), the largest private urologic practice in St. Louis and the Metro East, wants to educate and encourage women to take charge of their urologic health. Two of the most common urologic conditions women face are urinary incontinence and urinary tract infections (UTIs).
“Urologic conditions can be embarrassing to talk about but they are also highly treatable so we want women to know that they don’t have to just live with it,” said Dr. Elizabeth Williams. “We want to encourage our patients to come in if anything feels abnormal or is impacting their day-to-day life. Burning sensations, frequent urge to urinate or leakage are all reasons to come see us at USL. Some urologic issues can also be signs of underlying health conditions so we always want to rule that out as well.”
Dr. Williams is the only female urologist in St. Louis that is fellowship-trained in female pelvic medicine. Urinary incontinence, the uncontrollable loss of urine, impacts nearly 15 million women in the US. Often referred to as bladder leakage, it can vary from a slight loss of urine after sneezing, coughing or laughing to a complete inability to control urination. Treatment options depend on the degree of severity and can range from bladder training exercises, diet and fluid changes, pelvic floor exercises, injectable treatments or simple, outpatient surgery procedures.
When it comes to UTIs, around 50 percent of women experience one at some point in their lives. Symptoms of a UTI can include burning when urinating, urgent need to urinate, foul-smelling or cloudy urine, a small amount of blood in urine and pain in the abdomen or lower back.
“We want people to know that there are many simple treatment options available that are safe and highly effective,” said Dr. Williams. “A lot of urologic issues women face can be dealt with non-surgically, sometimes even without medications. I want women to feel comfortable going to a urologist and learning what options are available.”
